Easy Homemade Layered Bean Dip
I can’t believe I had forgotten how delicious and easy it is to make a layered bean dip. It’s simple enough to make for a large gathering or just for yourself.
I actually enjoyed a delicious bean dip at church. A church member brought some to share and it was so good, I just had to recreate it at home.
I’m not a fan of using packages when possible so this recipe is almost fully made from scratch, using whole food ingredients.
I couldn’t be bothered making my own refried beans! So let’s get started with what you need!
What You Need
Ingredients
Refried beans: You can make your own but this is something I rather just buy canned! You only need 1 can.
Canned crushed tomatoes or salsa: Salsa tends to have added ingredients that I don’t care for so I use a can of crushed tomatoes and add a few spices to it instead. Very easy and delicious to make your own salsa at home.
Sour Cream: 1 cup sour cream is all you need!
Avocado or guacamole: Once again I easily make my own guacamole with 1 to 2 avocados. Just avocado, lemon and a couple spices to make your own preservative and number free guacamole!
Shredded Cheese: Can’t have a delicious layered bean dip without some shredded cheese!
Spices: salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, cumin and if you want a hint of spice you can add cayenne. We don’t really do spicey over here though.
Lemon or lime: Half a lemon is all you need to mix with your avocado for homemade guacamole. And the other half to add into your homemade salsa!
Fresh coriander: optional but adds a nice flavour to the salsa!
Supplies
Bowl: For mixing your ingredients in.
Baking dish, pie pan or rectangle storage container: To layer your bean dip into.
Layered Bean Substitutions
While I personally make the salsa and guacamole from scratch you can easily just buy them already made at the shops instead.
For a really good hit make some fermented salsa. It’s so flavourful and packed full of probiotics.
If you don’t have sour cream you can use plain Greek yoghurt as well it has a similar texture and tartness to it.

Notes
HOW TO STORE
If the whole thing doesn't get eaten in one sitting you can store this layered bean dip in an airtight container in the fridge for a couple days.
I wouldn't store it for too long as the avocado changes colour and the liquid starts to pool.

Is 5 layered bean dip served hot or cold?
I serve this bean dip cold as I personally don’t like to heat up avocado.
If you want to heat it up you can always add the avocado on top after its been warmed.
What to do with leftover bean dip?
If you happen to have leftover add this into a wrap for a flavourful meal. Mix in some shredded chicken or cooked ground beef (mince) for a delicious Mexican dish!
