Sourdough French Toast Tips

  1. Use older bread: Older bread is better to use because it holds its shape better. Really soft fresh bread can soak up too much mixture and become a bit mushy and breaks apart easier.
  2. Let it soak: Make sure your bread has time to soak in the egg mixture. I like to leave my older bread soaking for about 15 minutes.
  3. Cook in butter or coconut oil: Using butter or coconut oil adds a nice extra taste to the bread. It really enhances the flavours! I preferably wouldn’t use grapeseed, canola or any other oil like that.
  4. Preheat pan: Make sure your pan is already preheated with butter or oil in it. This will allow the bread to start cooking and reduce chances of any sticking happening. You don’t want it your pan to be on a medium heat setting.
  5. Thicker bread is better: Thicker bread will hold its form better than thinner bread. But older bread works well too!

There are a few ingredients you will need for this recipe.

Bread: For this recipe we are using Sourdough Bread, you might also like to try it with Sourdough Raisin Bread! You will need about 8 slices of bread.

Eggs: You will need between 6-8 eggs. I use 6 eggs if they are large eggs and 8 if they are smaller eggs.

Cream: Cream will make this more like a delicious custard you don’t need too much cream.

Milk: You can use any milk you like; it helps to thin down the egg mixture, so it absorbs better into the bread.

Sweetener: I personally love to use rapadura sugar to sweeten up it’s like brown sugar in taste but healthier. You can also use honey or raw sugar as well!

Vanilla: Just a little to give it an extra delicious flavour.

Cinnamon: You don’t need to add cinnamon, but I love the flavour it gives to the French toast!

Butter or oil: You will need some sort of fat to cook the French toast in, so they don’t stick, adds flavour and gets the outside of the bread crispier!
