What To Use For The Base Of The Wreath

You can get creative and use several things as a base for your wreath. As long as it’s round and sturdy it should be fine. Remember you are going to attach your greenery on top of the base, so you probably won’t see it anyway. Some options include.

  1. Grapevine base store or bought version. You can use any flexible long twigs to create your own base. I happened to use sweet potato vines for mine.
  2. Round wire frame
  3. Embroidery hoops ideally 10 to 12 inches in size.
  4. Foam Rings

Just to name a few options. But like I said anything round, and sturdy should do fine!

What You Need To Make A Wreath

Supplies needed to make a homemade wreath.

To make a wreath you will need a few things.

  1. A base for your greenery and ornaments to stick onto. You can either make one or buy one.
  2. You will want some sort of greenery can be real or fake. I’ll talk about what sort of greenery to use below.
  3. String of neutral colour or wire to tie your greenery to the base.
  4. Scissors for cutting the string or wire.
  5. Glue gun is handy for securing any ornaments you’d like to add onto your wreath.
  6. Any extra pieces you want to add to your wreath like ribbons, baubles, dried citrus, pinecones etc.

What Greenery To Use For Wreaths

If you are wanting to use live greenery some work better than others to make your wreath look full.

  1. Holly, Ivy, Evergreens, Spruce, Cypress, Pines, Furs and Cedars are some popular options used in wreaths. You can use whatever you like though and play around with it!
  2. If going for fake, there are some really nice faux garlands you can purchase for reasonable prices. You want them to look full. Some of the nice ones usually include a combination of greenery in them like a mixture of eucalyptus leaves.

Here is a nice faux garland that is full and beautiful.

What Ornaments Can I Put On My Wreath?

This is honestly the funnest part! You can get so creative and literally put almost anything as long as it’s not too heavy or awkward to stick on your wreath. Here are a few ideas!

  1. Real or Faux flowers
  2. Dried Citrus
  3. Baubles
  4. Cinnamon sticks
  5. Ribbons
  6. Pinecones
  7. Small dried limes and oranges
  8. Rosemary would look and smell lovely as well.

How To Assemble A Wreath Step By Step Instructions

  1. First either collect your vines if you are going to assemble a base yourself or grab your base.

2. If you are assembling your own you will want 4-8 vines around 3 to 4 feet long. The number of vines you get will determine how thick your base will be. I used 4 sweet potato vines for mine and mine came out 12 inches around when done.

3. Start by removing any greens. Grab one vine and make a circular shape to the size you like.

4. Grab another vine and twist it around making sure to weave the ends in so they aren’t poking out. Keep going around with the rest of the vines weaving the ends in until you have completed your base.

5. Place your plants or garland on top cut them to size if need be. You are going to want to secure it with wire or string in at least 4 to 6 spots equal distance apart.

6. If you want to add other pieces on top lay them out first so you can see how you like it. Like I did with the dried citrus. Then with a hot glue gun glue them into place. Depending on the weight and size you can also tie them in place. For example, a pinecone and baubles I would tie rather than glue.

7. That’s it, now you can hang it on a doorknob, a hook or nail and enjoy! It’s super simple and really fun to make!

Is It Cheaper To Make A Wreath Or Buy One?

After looking up some wreaths to purchase, nice ones can be pretty pricey! Making your own wreath can be very inexpensive and is incredibly fun to make. Plus, it’s custom, so no one else will have the exact same one as you!

You can literally make it for nothing if you are using natural products to make your own base and the greenery. Even if you choose to buy a base and faux plants it’s still a lot cheaper than purchasing an already made wreath.

I’d say to do it not just because it’s cheaper but because the joy factor is worth it!

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed this post on how you can make an easy homemade wreath at home! It’s super simple and so much fun to make. Displaying something you made just makes it that more special. Let me know if you give it a go! Have a lovely day and I’ll talk to you in my next post!
