Home is more than just a place you live. A biblical home has the potential to change the lives of not just your immediate family. It can change the lives of your future lineage and those you welcome into your home as well. Have you ever stopped to think about the impact your home can make?
What Is A Biblical View Of Homemaking?
While certain task might not always be the most enjoyable, we are to do things without grumble and complaint.
Colossians 3: 23-24 “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”
Through our actions and how we take care of those around us is how we show God we love him. Even when we are cleaning the 5th spill for the day, doing yet another load of laundry, cooking another meal we are to do it with a merry heart.
You are not just doing it for your family you are doing it for God. You are giving your life to serving those around you like Jesus taught throughout the New testament.
Sometimes a blessing might not feel like a blessing. But having dishes means we have food, dirty laundry says we have clothes, and a noisy house means it is filled.
Psalm 127:1 – “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.” A home needs to be built on the foundation of God and Jesus. To have a home filled with peace, joy, and love we need to rely on our heavenly father.
Anyone with a home knows that at times it can be chaotic, stressful and even an overwhelming place to be in. When kids are screaming and fighting, dishes are stacked up and laundry is piled high it’s hard to feel calm and joyful.
We need God to help bring peace to our hearts and understanding to our minds so that we can help bring order back into the home. He gives us strength even in the hardest of times so that we build our homes up instead of tearing them down.
What Does God Say About Homemaking?
Homemaking is not a specific word found in the bible as it was just normal life. The women stayed at home, raised and taught the children in the ways of the lord, cleaned and cooked.
The men had their own roles as well which were very important too, but I am talking to the women here.
1 Timothy 5:14 “ I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.”
Proverbs 14:1 “Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.”
A wise woman knows her role in the home is important. She is to guide her home and work with a merry heart so that anyone else who would oppose her has nothing ill to say.
When we complain about children, duties of the home and yes even our husband we are giving others a reason to complain back and look down on homemaking. We all have hard days but let’s try to cut down on the complaints to others and pray to God for strength and wisdom.
If someone were to come into your home what impression would it make on them?
Proverbs 31:27 “She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”
If this sounds overwhelming remember to always just do your best. The bible says we are not to be idle in our homes but it doesn’t mean we are not allowed to rest.
We are to know what is happening in our homes and make sure it is running smoothly. Our homes should be clean and orderly, there should be food available, everyone has appropriate clothing and is taken care of.
I don’t believe we should be scrolling mindlessly on the internet or binge-watching shows. These things don’t add value to our lives or other lives. When resting we should be nourishing our souls and bodies.
Purpose Of A Biblical Home
Proverbs 22:6 says “Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it”. Your home is a place of training up the next generation, who will then train up the following generation.
Raising kids who have a strong foundation in Gods everlasting love. They grow up learning how to care for others and stay strong in their faith when adversary comes their way.
1Timothy 5:10 Says “Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.”
Our homes are not just meant for us but for others who might be in need of comfort. For those who might need some encouragement, neighbourly love, kindness or just to be listened to. This is how you can change lives and create a biblical home.
Ministry Starts At Home
The bible talks a lot about sharing the gospel, welcoming visitors and raising children in the way of the lord. In order to do those things a few things need to be in place first.
First, I do believe our houses should be presentable not spotless by any means, but we should have orderly homes. If you need help with decluttering and organising I did write a post here. When everything has a place it’s really easy to keep a tidy home and decreases stress.
Second food is a big part of the home. Biblically food was used not just for nourishment but for celebration. It was a way of bringing people together, making peace with enemies and a way to serve others.
It is a good idea to try and keep extra food on hands in case someone comes to your home. It’s extra special when someone sits down with you, has a cup of tea and some biscuits available. Some ideas of things to keep on hand include,
- Coffee, herbal teas, honey, sugar and milk.
- Crackers, cheese, dips, chips.
- Vegetables like cucumbers, carrot, capsicum for vegetable sticks and dip.
- Freezer meals are great to have on hand if you need a quick meal. Try and make double when cooking dinner so you can freeze part of it.
One more way to minister to others or spark conversations in your home is to display your faith. Have meaningful bible quotes hanging on your wall or in picture frames throughout your house. Have biblical photos up that display your faith in Jesus.
Deuteronomy 11:20 “ And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates.”
Words Of Encouragement When Times Are Tough
Everyone has difficult days, days that feel long, exhausting physically and emotionally. These days are the days we need to pray the most.
These are the days when we need to lean more into God and these days reminder us that we need him more than ever. Being a wife and mother trying to build a biblical home can feel overwhelming at times.
Remember though God does not leave us to fend for ourselves. I want to leave you with a few encouraging bible verses.
Isiah 41:10 “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Isiah 40:29 “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.”
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
