Where to Start Cleaning?
I always learned to clean from top to bottom. It makes sense right? Everything you clean from the top will drop to lower levels.
If you start bottom to top you will find everything you cleaned just getting recovered in dust again. You will find in this spring-cleaning guide I try to order the cleaning list in this manner. Top to bottom.

So, let’s get started with the very top!
Remove cobwebs from ceiling
While everything was resting, spiders have been awake and busy! They seem to really like the top corners of the cieling.
You can go about cleaning cobwebs however you like! With a broom, a duster or my preferred method is with a vacuum.
You will be amazed at how much of a difference this can make in the look of your home! Definitely if you have low ceilings.
Clean Ceiling Fans and air Conditioning unit
Have you looked at your fans lately? They are a great at accumulating dust! You don’t want that to blow all around.
Make sure your fan is off first, and I like to use a wet microfibre cloth to wipe off all the dust. When it’s slightly wet the dust sticks easier and doesn’t fall nearly as much everywhere on the floor.
Same with the air-conditioning unit. I will use a wet wipe for the outside to wipe off all the dust. Make sure to clean your filter too!
Wipe Down Light Fixtures
I really love microfibre cloths as they work great for picking up more dirt and food residues! Make sure to turn off your lights first and then wipe down your light bulbs and light fixtures.
Depending on the type of light fixtures you have a lot of bugs can accumulated around them as they are attracted to the lights at night!
Overlooked Surfaces
There are so many areas in the home that get overlooked but here are a few you probably havent’ thought off.
- Clean the stove hood, it can get surprisingly oily and dirty!
- Above the kitchen cupboards, wow that can accumulate dust!
- Air vents if you have any in the home.
- Wipe down the walls. This can make such a difference just a little soapy water should do the trick!
Clean Curtains and Blinds
If you have curtains in your home, you should be able to wash them in the washing machine in gentle cycle. Afterwards hang them on a clothesline to dry or gentle setting on your dryer.
For blinds you can wipe them one by one with a damp cloth or honestly just buy a microfiber blind cleaner. It’s so cheap and will make your life exponentially easier and quicker!
Wash Windows
I’m not sure if there is anyone out there who loves to wash windows, but I can definitely say I do not! Clean windows really do make a home look fresh and clean.
You can use a soft bristled broom and dip it into hot soapy water to scrub your windows and then squeegee it afterward. Or you can buy a window vacuum cleaner! Yep heard me right!
You can spray, wipe and vacuum using this cordless window vacuum cleaner. It will suck up the dirty water leaving no streaks or spots. Window cleaning just got a lot quicker and easier!
Clean the window ledges and sliding door tracks
The best way I think to clean sliding door or window tracks is with a vacuum cleaner. Use the brush attachment to pick up any loose debris and dust.
You may want to go over it with a wet cloth or even toothbrush (You won’t use this toothbrush on your teeth again!) for harder stains.
They also sell window track cleaner sets that can also be used to clean your blinds and other areas of your home. I’m happy to stick with my vacuum cleaner but maybe you’d like something smaller to have on hand!
Brighten Up Furniture
What a difference clean furniture can make! This can take some time so work in one area of the house before moving on to the next. Here are some ways to brighten up furniture.
- Use a damp microfibre cloth to wipe down shelves in your bookshelf, the coffee table, buffet table, and of course chairs and table legs.
- If you have wooden furniture after wiping it down you can use furniture polish, or wood polish to make your furniture shine look new. This also helps protect it from cracking. You can easily make your own wood polish as well.
Deep Clean Couches and Accessories
Remove chair and couch cushions and wash if they are able to be washed in the washing machine. You can also hand wash these items. Or you may want to use a steam cleaner, this works on many types of couches.
While cleaning couch cushions make sure to clean the pillows and throws as well. Take the pillow covering off and machine wash if able or hand wash them. Let them dry in the sun and they will look like new!
Make sure to read cleaning labels on your couches, cushions and pillows first.
Thoroughly Wash Rugs and Carpets
Let’s be honest you may vacuum your rugs and carpets but how often do you deep clean them. Vaccuming can only get rid of loose particles, but it can’t get rid of grease, oils and anything else that is stuck hard to it like playdough!
Yea that can really stick in well.
While you can scrub by hand your rugs you may want to take them to a dry cleaner if they aren’t too large. You can spot clean or also steam clean.
Steam cleaning is a great option for cleaning carpets as well as it can really get dirt’s and stains that are stuck on your carpet!
Clean Under the Furniture
The next thing to do in this spring-cleaning guide is to clean under furniture. This is a great time to get the husband involved if you can!
Get him to move some of that heavy furniture like couches and beds so that you can vacuum under neath them. You will be amazed at just how much dust seems to accumulate under these places!
I personally really love my robot vacuum! While it can’t fit under one of my beds as the gap is like 1 inch, it can fit under the other bed and couches easily!
Make sure it’s charged, turn it on and let it vacuum your whole house for you. It works surprisingly really well and can get under lots of places you might not be able to reach easily!
I turn it on right before leaving the house and come back to clean floors its great!
Vacuum and Mop
No house cleaning will be complete without vacuuming the whole house and giving it a good old mop.
I think it’s pretty self-explanatory what to do here. Vacuum your home or use a robot vacuum to do it for you and mop the floors!
I personally wouldn’t bother getting a robot vacuum with the mop function it vacuums great, but I don’t find the mopping is that amazing. You will still have to mop again to get rid of stains or sticky residue.
Clean Out Fridge and Freezer
I like to go through my fridge regularly but freezer not too much. Take this time to give your fridge and freezer a good clean out.
- Go through and see what things need to be thrown out. Like dairy, old left over food, fruit and vegetables, old frozen meals ect.
- Start cleaning shelf by shelf. Remove stains and left over food debris.
- Break up any ice in your freezer and give your freezer a good wipe down.
Go Through Kitchen Pantry
I remember finding like 10-year-old condiments in someone pantry who I won’t name, when I was going to cook a meal. Several of their spices were seriously old!
The pantry is an area we can easily store lots of goods and then forget about them or say we will use it one day. Well if you haven’t used it yet it might be time to toss.
Go through your pantry see what things have expired, what things you just aren’t going to use that you can donate, and what you want to keep.
Give the pantry a good wipe down as it can get covered in oil and spices over time and then reorganise it with the pantry goods you plan on keeping.
This will feel so good when it’s done!
Declutter Your House and Wardrobe
Decluttering is a huge part of spring cleaning. Time to get rid of broken, unused or unwanted items. These things just take up space.
Everything you have in your home is something you have to take care off! Less is more! If you want to read more on how to declutter your home, I wrote a whole post about that here How To Successfully Declutter Your Home Quickly.
Just do one room at a time and before you know it you will have a clean, organised home you will absolutely love! Less stuff is less stress!
Helpful Tips
