Why Bake Sourdough Goods?

There are so many reasons why you should first of all bakes at home from scratch yourself. And fermenting your flour is just another great bonus.

  1. From scratch food is pretty much always healthier than store bought bread and baked goodies. Just look at the ingredient list for bread alone and that should make you want to make your own!
  2. It’s cheaper to make your own baked items. Prices can vary drastically from cheap products filled with additives to very expensive items that are deemed to be cleaner.
    • You will save a lot of money making your own!
  3. Sourdough helps to increase the nutrient content in your food because it ferments the flour.
  4. It’s easier to digest sourdough products as phytic acid levels get decreased and once again more nutrients are made available.
  5. It adds a really lovely flavour to your baked goods that you just can’t get from store bought products.

What Is Sourdough Discard?

Sourdough discard is just the sourdough that is not currently active and bubbly. When making a sourdough starter you will end up with a lot of discards with the constant feeding to build up your starter.

Instead of discarding this product like many people say to do you can easily make delicious and nutritious food with it.

Discard doesn’t normally rise as well as active starter does because it’s lost its strength. The bacteria are no longer at their peak producing bubbles and rising.

Discard can have a few bubbles in it if it’s been fed somewhat recently or it’s flat if it hasn’t’ been fed in a few days. Here are some sourdough discard recipes I think you will love!
