Chocolate Avocado Smoothie Ingredients
Cacao Powder: I use Cacao not cocoa as it’s pure and not processed leaving you with more minerals and antioxidants.
Milk Kefir: This is what gives you all the probiotics and adds to the thickness of the smoothie. As milk kefir is generally pretty thick once fermented.
You can use other milk options with this recipe but it’s the milk kefir that gives you the extra good bacteria and really boost the health benefits here. You can make milk kefir using nuts as well, but kefir grains need to be refreshed later on in normal milk.
Rapadura Sugar: It’s similar to brown sugar in taste but is dehydrated black strap molasses. Rich in minerals and a beautiful flavour. I bulk buy this sugar, but you can replace with honey, maple syrup or a different sweetener.
Banana: I love to use frozen banana when possible but you don’t need frozen banana. It adds extra creaminess, sweetness and thickness to your smoothie.
Avocado: We are used to the taste, so we add a whole avocado into our smoothies. If you have a large avocado only use half. Avocado gives you the healthy fats you need and gives this smoothie it’s amazing creaminess.
Sea salt: I always add a pinch of sea salt to my recipes for the extra mineral content. Also, I had heard a long time ago that sea salt enhances the chocolate flavour and have added a bit of salt to chocolate ever since.
Vanilla extract: This is optional but I do like the taste so add a little vanilla to my smoothies.
Black Strap Molases: This is optional, but I personally love black strap molasses as its rich in minerals. I bulk buy this as well and love adding it to chocolate, it really compliments the flavour. You only need a little but goodness we all love it!
How To Make Chocolate Avocado Smoothie?
This is super easy to make!
- Add all the ingredients into a high powered blender.
- Blend all the ingredients until smooth. Sometimes I scrape the sides a little and then blend again.
- Pour the content into cups and serve!
- You can also place it in the fridge to serve later. Because of the milk kefir it will continue to ferment so I’d recommend drinking within 24 to 48 hours.

Common Questions
Does Avocado Taste Good In A Smoothie?
We actually can’t taste the avocado in the smoothie at all. I recommend starting with just half an avocado. Once you get used to the consistency and flavour try adding the whole avocado. The avocado gives it a creamy consistency you will love.
Does Avocado Go Brown In A Smoothie?
Because this is a chocolate smoothie you won’t notice any browning. In a white smoothie you might notice a slightly darker colour after a day or so.
Can I Use Any Milk To Make An Avocado Smoothie?
You can use any milk you like. Milk kefir gives this recipe the probiotics and also adds to the thickness of the smoothie. But any milk will work with the recipe just fine. You can also make milk kefir using different types of nut milks.
Can I Make This Smoothie Ahead Of time?
You can make this smoothie the night before and enjoy the next day. I suggest drinking the smoothie within one to two days as the milk kefir will make it continually ferment.
Can I Freeze The Smoothie?
You can freeze it and dethaw it for a later. I personally think it taste best fresh though. Just pour contents into a glass container or freezer bag and take it out when you want to drink it.
Making this! I hate avocados but know I need to get them in my diet, so in to a yummy chocolate smoothie they go! Thanks for the recipe!
