Best Homemade Sourdough Garlic Bread Recipe
This is hands down one of my favourite Sourdough recipes to make. It is very easy to make and oh so delicious. Once you have your homemade sourdough French bread or store bought one all you need is just a few key ingredients.
Making your own from home is cheaper, healthier, and so very satisfying. You can bulk make and freeze these to have on hand for a quick add on to your meal or just make it fresh.
Either way it’s pretty quick to whip up and will leave your family and friends impressed.
Why Make Sourdough Garlic Bread?
Have you ever looked at the ingredients in store bought garlic bread? It might come as a shock at how many numbers and extra things are in that garlic bread!
Homemade sourdough garlic bread only requires a few main ingredients while store bought ones are loaded with extra nasty things you don’t need in your body. Homemade sourdough garlic bread is cheaper than storebought versions, in my opinion it taste better and is a lot healthier for you.
Plus, I love how you can play around with different herb toppings and how easy it is to make a larger batch and then freezer for later for a quick addition to any meal.
Sourdough Garlic Bread Tips
- If you can’t make your own sourdough French bread you can buy a store bought one and then add the toppings. It’s still healthier than buying store bought garlic bread as you are adding your own toppings.
- You can add dried herbs or fresh herbs. Now I prefer dried herbs to be honest as I always have them on hand and it freezes really nicely on the sourdough garlic bread.
- You can use minced garlic or powdered garlic. Fresh minced garlic does taste amazing but I do like to use my organic garlic powder when I’m in a hurry and it still taste very good.
- It’s easier to use spreadable butter on your French bread or room temperature butter than having to cut chunks of butter and try to spread on your French bread.
Ingredients Needed
- Sourdough French Bread: This can be homemade or storebought they both work great. With sourdough bread you get the extra health benefits, and, in my opinion, it does give it an extra boost in flavour.
- Butter: I find either room temperature butter or spreadable butter to be easier when spreading it on your bread.
- Sea salt or another good quality salt like Himalayan salt. Salt has lots of minerals and gives it a good flavour I wouldn’t skip the salt
- Garlic powder or minced garlic. Minced garlic has a stronger more delicious taste, but garlic powder works well too.
- Italian Seasoning. You don’t have to add Italian seasoning you can add different herbs if you want but I love adding the mixture of herbs. It gives it such a wonderful smell and taste.
- Cheese. You can add any cheese you like on top. Cheese is amazing on top of garlic bread.
I add just normal shredded cheese as that’s what I always have on hand, but you can definitely do a mixture of different cheeses including parmesan yummy!

How To Make Sourdough Garlic Bread
- Preheat oven to 200C/ 400F
- If you made your bread let it cool down for about an hour before cutting it with a bread knife. Once cool cut your bread with a bread knife I like to cut my length wise, but you can slice it as well. Place this on a baking sheet or silicon mat.
- You can use either spreadable butter placed into a bowl or let your butter soften at room temperature in a small bowl and mix the salt, garlic powder, and herbs into it and mix well.
- Spread a nice thick layer onto each halves of the bread or bread slices.
- Layer the top with your choice of cheese and if you want it to look extra pretty add a touch more dried or fresh herbs on the top.
- Place in the oven for about 10 minutes until the cheese is golden and melted.
- Pull out of the oven, allow to cool slightly, slice and enjoy!
How To Store Sourdough Garlic Bread
You can store left over slices in an airtight container in the fridge up to 5 days. Or you can place it in a freezer bag and freeze it for several months. I reheat the pieces back in the oven at 200C/400F.
Questions And Answers
Why is my garlic bread not crispy?
There can be several reasons why your garlic bread is not crispy. One you want to make sure you don’t overload your bread with too much butter, or you will end up with soggy garlic bread.
The second is you want to make sure you cook your bread uncovered so the cheese browns and the bread goes crispy.
Is garlic salt or garlic powder better for garlic bread?
I prefer garlic powder for that stronger garlic taste. Garlic salt can make this bread come out to salty and doesn’t have as strong as a garlic taste. Your best bet is to use either garlic powder or even fresh minced garlic!
