How To Set Homemaking Goals

It’s always good to have goals in life. Homemaking Goals are no different to any sort of life goals.

Goals give you something to strive for, are a good challenge and are rewarding to accomplish. But how do we set goals?

Homemaking goals can be easy and attainable. Creating goals takes time. Here are tips and ideas on how to make goals you can achieve.

What goals should we be setting? How can we reach our homemaking goals?

Setting goals can be difficult if you don’t know where to start, so in this blog post I want to discuss as much as I can about setting goals as a homemaker and how to reach those goals!

What Goals Should Homemakers Have?

Setting goals as a homemaker. Paper and Marker on a table.

Okay well this one will vary drastically from family to family, but I do think there are some good goals homemakers should have overall.

  1. Cook more food from scratch: Homecooked meals are cheaper, healthier and can really give a sense of accomplishment. This is a great goal for any homemaker to start with!

2. Spend more quality time with the kids and husband: At the end of the day, family should come first. Making connections, laughing and spending time together should be part of your daily routine. It’s never a bad thing to spend quality time with the people you love.

3. Set up a cleaning schedule: If you want to simplify your life creating a cleaning schedule will help drastically! I tell you exactly how to do this in the blog post underlined above. Creating a schedule that works for you and your family creates ease and peacefulness in the home.

4. Declutter the home: This is big! Decluttering your home takes time and is a goal we all should have! You don’t have to be a minimalist but honestly, we all have things we can let go off.

Everything extra you have in your home is something you need to clean, care for and find a spot for! Less truly can be better!

A few other random ideas can be to start a vegetable garden, learn a new homemaking skill or start a home business.

As you can see the goals can vary drastically! Pick one or 2 to start with. Too many goals at one time can lead to anxiety and stress so start small.

Start Backwards

Cooking healthy dinners for the family.

If you want your homemaking goals to get accomplished, first you have to think of the big picture. What is the end result of this goal being reached?

Are you cooking 5 meals a night from scratch every week? Are you implementing a weekly game night, or family read alouds together?

Is your house neat and organised? Think of the big picture first.

Then think about the steps you need to take to reach these goals. It’s all good to have a big picture in mind, but that alone won’t lead you to success without some sort of plan.

Set Small Goals

Once you have your goal in mind, you know what the end result is you are hoping to achieve. Start breaking that down into smaller goals.

For example, I want to declutter my whole house! Wow that’s overwhelming right?!

Let’s break this down into smaller goals that ultimately lead you with a clutter free home.

Every week I want declutter one area of my home. Or make it every fortnight or even month if you have to!

Every day or other day I will declutter one area in the room I’m focusing on. Example maybe a closet, a drawer ect.

Every day or other day I will give myself 20 minutes in the afternoon to declutter that one area in the specific room I’m decluttering.

Now instead of it being I’m going to declutter my whole entire house, it’s I’m going to take 20 minutes to work declutter one small area in a room. And if you are persistent your house will be clutter free without being stressed!

Form New Habits

To achieve goals, you have to form new habits. Like the example I gave above with decluttering a home.

The new habit is setting aside a set amount of time every day or other day to work on a specific task.

Habits are something you just do! You don’t have to put much thought into it, because it’s something you naturally do regularly.

This makes life easier if you form good habits.

Forming new habits can take time though which is why you want to create systems that work for you while you are trying to form a new habit.

Create Systems That Work

Set yourself up for success! You need to create habits that are sustainable and work for you!

We will stick with the decluttering your home example.

If you want your home to get decluttered and stay clutter free, you’re going to need to have some systems in place.

  1. Don’t buy things you don’t need. If it’s not a need take time to think about it before purchasing. If you walk away there’s a good chance you won’t go back for that item because it’s a want not a need.
    • This can lead to less random purchases, so you aren’t filling up your home with more useless items.

2. Make decluttering your home part of your weekly routine. Once your home is decluttered its just maintenance. I have to say we somehow still acquire more things we don’t need every month!

3. Have a donation box or bag handy in the garage or closet.

Every time you see something that can be donated like a shirt that’s too small or a toy that’s no longer played with, simply grab that item and place it immediately in that bag or box and donate once it’s fill!

With just those few simple systems, I can maintain a clutter free home.

Don’t Give Up On Yourself!

There will be times when you might not stick to your goal 100 percent and that’s okay! Don’t give up because you had one bad day or even one bad week.

Give yourself grace and keep trying. Change your systems if you have to, to make reaching your goals easier for you not harder.

If you are struggling with reaching your goal, stop and take a moment to reflect.

Why is that goal important to you? What can you do to simplify reaching that goal? What are the obstacles in your way and how can you overcome them?

Remember no one is perfect, do the best you can do, and only you know what your best is!

Mistakes To Avoid When Reaching Goals

Here are some mistakes to try and avoid so you can better reach your homemaking goals!

  1. Don’t compare yourself to others: Everyone is different, has different lives, different amount of kids, different personalities and different amount of help.
    • Don’t compare someone else’s success or failures to your own individual journey. Focus on you and doing your best only!
  2. Minimise the use of electronics: Electronic devices are time suckers! They can be handy when trying to learn something new, but they are addicting! They draw you in and next moment you realise it’s been an hour and you probably don’t even remember why you went on that device to begin with!
    • Just about any goal you have will better be accomplished if you cut down on screen time.
  3. Be specific with each goal you make. The more specific you are the better you will know how to accomplish that goal. Going to broad can lead to confusion on where to even start.
  4. Start with only one to 2 goals at a time: Reaching a goal takes time, as new habits must be formed, and sometimes bad habits must be broken.
    • The hardest part is the beginning when you are establishing new routines. Once a routine and habit have been established your goal will become easier to achieve.

Conclusion

I hope you found this post informative and helpful when you plan on setting your own goals as a homemaker.

Creating and achieving goals doesn’t have to hard when you know how to plan it out and work through it.
