Hiking

Fall is such a fun time to go hiking and enjoying different trails. While many people think of spring and summer for hiking these months can get pretty hot! Autumn is a lot cooler, and the scenery is quite beautiful with all of its changing colours. Go back and visit trails you walked earlier in the year and see the changes happening throughout the different seasons. This is a great activity to connect back to nature, keep you active and anyone can do this either by themselves or in a group!

Baking

Honestly who doesn’t want something warm and cozy to nibble on during the cooler months. The aroma home baked goods wafting through the house is a smell everyone loves and brings fond memories. If you are already a baker, then this is a great time to up your baking since the weather is cooler. If you haven’t baked before why not try now. It can be something simple like cookies or you might want to start baking your own bread. If bread making has been on your radar, I have lots of sourdough bread recipes that are easy and delicious from Sourdough sandwich bread to Sourdough Hamburger buns.

Gardening

I personally feel the autumn gardening is one of the best gardens. You don’t have to be out in the heat, there’s generally not as many pests to deal with and you can water your garden less. I find the autumn garden to be very relaxing and pretty hardy. Depending on what zone you are in there is quite a nice variety of root vegetables that can be grown, brassicas, and delicious variety of peas. If you haven’t got into gardening this just might be the time to get started, it’s a lot less stressful during the cooler months I have found.

Learn To Preserve Food

This does go along with gardening but learn to preserve your bounty! Or maybe you are getting some awesome deals from farmers or fruit markets on seasonal fruit and want to preserve those. There are so many different preservation methods I wouldn’t try and do them all at one time but pick one or 2 and give them a go. Here are a few options to preserve your harvest. You can freeze, dehydrate, ferment, quick pickle, water bath can, pressure can goods or even freeze dry. My personal favourites are the first four on the list, they are easy to learn and require minimal equipment.

Sewing

Autumn can be a time where we tend to spend more of our time indoors. So why not learn to sew and make some easy autumn pieces. You can start with a simple blanket or quilt, sew a scarf, or maybe there is something that needs to be hemmed. Sewing is not only a useful skill, but also a rewarding one. Something about creating something yourself is so exciting and fun. So, sit back, watch a few sewing tutorials with a mug of hot chocolate, tea and or coffee and give it a go!

Crochet Or Knitting

There is something so peaceful about sitting by the fire, a warm beverage on the table next to you while you are crocheting or knitting. Once you learn a few basic stitches, you can easily make a scarf, beanie or even start making a small blanket. I personally really enjoy crocheting and find it very relaxing. If you want the satisfaction of finishing a project, faster get a larger size hook and thick yarn! You can make a scarf that will keep you warm and you can proudly show off in just a day!

Candle Making

Autumn is the time for warm candles flickering on the table and windowsill. It’s a time for the natural glow that brings a sense of peace and relaxation. Candles are surprisingly very easy to make. While you do need a couple of ingredients to make your own candles like wax and wick, once you have those things you can make quite a lot in one sitting. It’s pretty easy to find candle making kits with instruction as well.

You can keep it plain and simple or add scents and colours to really make them pop. They also make beautiful gifts for the upcoming holidays. There is a lot of joy in making and burning your own candles, so if you have the time this is really fun to do!

Reading

Seriously the best time to snuggle into bed with a warm Doona and grab your favourite book and read. Summer is the time to be outdoors and always seems so busy while Autumn and winter can be a time to slow down and relax. Maybe write a list of books you’d like to read this autumn and see if you can get through them all! Wether you are snug in bed or cozied up by the fireplace there is pure enjoyment when picking up a good book.

Nature Journalling

This is something I have wanted to do for a while but haven’t gotten there yet. Having a journal where you can save pressed flowers and leaves, write about the hikes and things you have seen outside, paint or glue a picture you took while you are out and about make this journal so unique to you. It’s a great way to remember the season, what you saw, learned, smelled and heard. While you could get super fancy and have a bunch of water paint brushes and paints on hand you can also keep it simple. All you really need is a pencil and blank journal preferably with no lines so you can draw or add pieces of nature if you choose to.

Photography

The colours this time of year are beautiful, so why not try your hands at photography and see if you can capture this season’s beauty. There is a definite art to photography, but it can be lots of fun playing around with different settings, lighting and focus points. You never know what amazing images you can capture! These days most phones can take pretty amazing pictures so if you don’t have a camera give it a go on your phone!

Embroidery

Learn new skills as a stay at home mom. Embroidery on a table with needle and thread.

If you are wanting to slow down and really enjoy the moment, try giving embroidery a go. There are lots of different kits for beginners to more advanced. You can do this sitting down comfortably by the fire, almost any age can enjoy doing this craft and it’s really inexpensive to do. You can create something beautiful to hand on your wall, frame or give as a gift. The best part is you can always learn more so it’s not boring. There are lots of different types of techniques that give different looks and lots of different things you can embroider onto. You don’t have to just embroider on a cloth, you can add a design to kitchen towels, hats, pants, sweaters, pretty much any type of clothing! So have fun and enjoy learning this skill in the warmth and comfort of your couch!

Painting

Another hobby you can start in fall is painting. Wether you want to try your hands on water painting or acrylic painting, this is the time to do it. You can go outdoors and try and pain nature, bring some nature indoors to try and paint, or watch YouTube tutorials and paint in the comfort of your home. You can easily buy a set of acrylic or water colour paints, paintbrushes and suitable paper at most bigger shops. If you find painting daunting, try sip and paints. They are really fun as well and events happen pretty regularly. Bring some friends or family and enjoy creating your own masterpiece under the guidance of an instructor!

Camping

Many people go camping during the summer months which can be incredibly hot! Autumn is a great time to go camping, have that fire blazing, hot cocoas on, marshmallows roasting and enjoy the cool breeze. I love getting all rugged up outdoors, enjoying the cool fall breeze and best of all there is minimal to no mosquitos! If you can go camping this is the time to do it and embrace the autumn season.

Flower Pressing

With the change of seasons soon most flowers will die back. This is a lovely time to pick a few variety of flowers to press and dry. Don’t just pick flowers though pick beautiful leaves and herbs as well! They can press wonderfully, and you can use them for an assortment of crafts later on. Flower pressing is very easy to do as long as you have paper and some heavy or thick books you can easily do this at home. It does take most flowers and leaves about 4 weeks sometimes more to dry properly so it’s fun to collect an assortment every week. Soon you will have a lovely collection of beautifully preserved pressed flowers.

Gaming (Board or Card Games)

When the kids are stuck more inside due to the weather why not start playing some board or card games. There are so many games out there you are sure to find something that everyone will enjoy. If you have kids who are sore losers, why not try and play a cooperative game where everyone is working together to beat the board! Wether you are playing solo games or games with family and friends this is something that is sure to bring about laughs and fun memories. I’ll list some of my personal favourite games and some suggestions for cooperative games as well!

Cooperative Games

Forbidden Island: Can you escape the island on time before it sinks? This cooperative game is not very easy and will keep you all engaged and entertained for ages!

Outfoxed: Who stole the pie!? Look for clues and try to figure out together who stole the pie before the sneaky fox escapes. This one is great if you have younger kids and is pretty fun.

Spirit Island: Can you protect your island from the incoming invaders? Work together to keep your island safe before it gets destroyed!
