Why Make Your Own

- Healthier: Making your own pizza base is so much healthier than the store-bought alternative. Pure ingredients, no additives or numbers and it taste so much better.
- Flavour: The flavour is so much better in homemade pizza bases. You can add spices into your base like garlic, Italian herbs or onion powder to enhance flavour. Plus, sourdough imparts a richer flavour as well!
- Cheap to make! You can make pizza bases for close to nothing! Just a few basic ingredients and you can feed your whole family.
Sourdough Pizza Tips
- You can make the dough ahead and let it sit in the fridge for up to 3 days. Gives the dough extra flavour and will make it easier to handle as well.
- Flatten out using your fingers instead of a rolling pin. Will give you more random bubbles and looks more rustic.
- Make sure your oven is nice and hot so your pizza base gets crunchy on the outside. It will cook quicker this way too.
- Don’t add too much sauce or your pizza dough can come out soggy!
What You Need!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sourdough starter: It can be active bubbly starter or discard.
- 4 cups flour: I use spelt flour but you can use whatever flour you prefer.
- 1 1/4 cup water: Go for filtered water not tap water.
- 3 tbsp olive oil: Adds a lovely flavour and gives it a nice crunch and softness.
- 2 tsp salt: I like to use sea salt for its health benefits.
- 2 tsp Italian seasoning: optional but adds so much lovely flavour!
Supplies
- Stand Mixer (optional): Makes mixing super easy just throw it all in and let it bring the dough together for you!
- Dough whisk: If you are mixing by hand, having a dough whisk has been the best thing I have bought for mixing all my baked goods!
- Bowl: You need a large bowl to mix your ingredients in and allow the dough to ferment.
- Pizza trays or Pizza stone: This will give you a nice crunchy, non-soggy base. Highly recommend getting one or the other.
How to Make Sourdough Pizza Base (Step by Step)

- Add the sourdough starter, water, salt, olive oil, and Italian herbs into a bowl.
- Add 1 cup of flour at a time as you mix the dough together either in a stand mixer or by hand with a dough whisk.
- Once the dough comes together nicely cover your bowl and allow it to ferment on the counter between 4-8 hours.
- You can also place it in the fridge and allow it to slowly ferment overnight for up to 3 days.
- Preheat the oven to 200c/400f.

6. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions and using your hands gently spread the dough until it’s about 1/4 inch thick.
7. I like to leave the edges a bit thicker.

8. Transfer the dough onto a pizza tray or pizza stone and place the toppings on your pizza base.
9. Place it in the oven and cook for about 12 minutes until cheese is golden.
10. Take out of the oven, slice and serve!

You can make the pizza base and then freeze them in large freezer ziploc bags. Make sure to place parchment paper between each pizza base so they don't stick together. Take it out, top with your favourite toppings and bake like normal.
