Sourdough Crumpet Recipe

Homemade sourdough crumpets are newer to us. I had never heard of this type of small bread that is pretty simple to make. You can have it as a sweet or savoury dish topped with whatever flavourings your heart desires.

Crumpets are a great breakfast, lunch or quick snack option. Don’t bother buying them from the shops! They are easy, cheap and so much healthier when they are homemade.

Sourdough Discard: You can use active or discard for this recipe. It doesn’t really matter what you use as we are adding baking soda to the crumpet mixture.

Water: You want your sourdough crumpet mixture to be watered down a bit. Use filtered water, I never recommend tap water.

Baking Soda: You will only need a little baking soda.

Sugar: You can use raw sugar, rapadura sugar or honey to slightly sweeten your crumpet mixture.

Most of the things you need you should have already at home. But here’s a list just in case!

  1. English Muffin rings or egg rings: I just use nonstick egg rings for these but if you want the larger size you will need to buy specific English muffin rings.
  2. Large bowl: To mix all your ingredients into.
  3. Fork or whisk to mix everything together
  4. Pan for cooking your crumpets in, I use and love my cast iron pans!

And that’s all you really need!

Sourdough Crumpet Questions And Answers

Why are my sourdough crumpets doughy?

If the pan is too hot the outside of the crumpets will cook to quickly leaving the inside still slightly undercook. Also, if your crumpet mixture is too thick it won’t allow your crumpets to cook as easily.

Why don’t my crumpets have holes?

If your crumpet batter is too thick you won’t get very many holes forming. You want your mixture to be more on the waterier side so that it pours easily and the holes form.

Are sourdough crumpets good for you?

I wouldn’t say they are necessarily very healthy, but sourdough crumpets wouldn’t be bad either. Everything in moderation and depending on your toppings will determine how good or bad they can be.

On their own it’s just fermented flour, water, a bit of sweetener of your choice and some baking soda which aren’t really bad at all.
