How To Enjoy Homemaking
While there may be many repetitive tasks there are many ways to create beauty, and excitement on a daily basis. Learning to enjoy homemaking has to do a lot with your mindset.
I’m not saying every day is going to be a beautiful magical day but we can change our minds and attitudes.
If you don’t believe what you are doing is important or meaningful it’s pretty hard to enjoy doing it everyday.
So I want to discuss mindset changes as well as some practical things you can do that naturally will make you happy while you are home.
How To Enjoy Homemaking Video
1. Changing Your Mindset
I have to say it all starts with the mind. If you start the day angry and resentful about the task ahead, having to take care of children or make breakfast, your day probably won’t get much better.
While it can seem hard initially, there are a few simple ways to change your attitude.
- If you are feeling like no one is appreciative or noticing what you do around the house try to memorise this verse! “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24 KJV.
- Remember the sacrifice you make every day of caring for others instead of just doing whatever you want is like you are doing it unto God. He sees your heart, your actions and knows everything.
- Even if you may be struggling with feelings of being unnoticed God always sees you and what you are doing right now matters more than you know!
- Either write a list of things you are grateful for and go through random things you are grateful for in your head during the day.
- I’m lucky I have a home I get to keep clean.
- We are lucky to have clothes to wear, so I have laundry.
- There’s plenty of food to eat, which means I have dishes.
- I realise quickly, I really should be grateful and not grumble so much for having an excess!
- Get the kids involved and helping!
- Oh, this has changed my attitude and has been such a blessing. While at first you will have to teach your kids what to do, once they got they got it!
- I wrote a whole blog post about chores for kids by age! Seriously game changer, it benefits you and it benefits your children greatly to contribute in the home.
- Put up inspiring or relevant bible verses or quotes in areas you spend a lot of time in.
- For example, the kitchen, maybe the bathroom and laundry areas. Things that remind you of your blessings and having a happy heart. There are so many wonderful and inspiring quotes and bible verses so have fun with that!
2. Creating Beauty
Your home should be your sanctuary, and you are lucky enough that you have the power to make it so! There are a few simple ways you can add beauty to your home that will make you smile and feel happier!
- Declutter! Yes, this one can initially be daunting but having less means less cleaning, less mess and everything has a place so it’s a lot easier for anyone to help pick items up. If you want helpful tips and a room by room decluttering guide I have a post for you here!
- Add plants and flowers to your home decor! While I love real plants you can get dried flowers which last forever, and you don’t have to actually care for them.
- There are also air plants that you can hang randomly and don’t require a lot of work. Even some realistic fake plants are sure to make you smile with that pop of color! I don’t know what it is but plants really do make a space come alive 😉
- Open windows and blinds so the house is bright and airy. Nothing is more uplifting than a bit of sunshine and fresh air.
- Have a few cozy areas to sit and relax in.
- Put a few extra pillows, a throw blanket and a lamp by the couch. Maybe it’s just a comfortable chair you can sit on by a window while sipping your warm tea. Doesn’t really matter as long as there is a space that is comfortable and relaxing for you.

3. Find Joy In Everyday Tasks
This one might take a bit more thought but there are ways you can truly find joy in even the most mundane tasks! Yes, even cleaning the toilet can potentially get more exciting lol.
- Have a cute basket (this one cute and very practical) with all the major cleaning supplies for when you dusting, cleaning windows, wiping counters ect. Having a nice basket, organised with all the cleaning things looks cute and its easier.
- Try new recipes or make your favourite meal to keep meals exciting when you are starting to feel bored about meal time.
- Having a cute washing basket that you take out when going to hang your laundry. I also love my stainless-steel pegs they last forever and never break compared to plastic one or wood ones! Those would get me so annoyed!
- Have your kids help you with chores and make a game of it. Time how fast you can tidy an area. Or just make conversations with them. This can actually be a great bonding moment!
- Play music while cleaning or folding laundry.
- Have candles on while prepping dinner, when sitting for dinner or washing up. There is something so soothing about candles flickering. And if you get wooden wick candles (these are so pretty!, they even make sounds like a little fireplace!
4. Dressing For The Day
This is more important than I ever really realized. There is something about staying in one’s pyjamas all day that just doesn’t send a message of productivity or caring very much. Not to say having a pyjama day now and then could be totally relaxing.
- Putting on a nice outfit that you feel comfortable in and brushing your hair and teeth can really make a difference to your overall mood.
- If you feel good about yourself, you’re more likely to have a more positive attitude throughout the day. You don’t have to dress nice for anyone in particular, dress nice for you! Your kids and husband do notice as well even if they don’t say so every time!
- Put on a cute apron when cleaning or cooking. Honestly the apron gets me so excited lol.
- Put a little make up on if you are feeling down and just want to feel that little extra pretty. If you feel comfortable and confident you will act it during your day to!
5. Slowing Down
Find moments in the day to just slow down and relax. Not everything has to be a rush and overwhelming. Yes there is always something else that can be done, but can it wait?
I have found even just washing dishes with my daughter to be lovely enjoyable moments where we chat and laugh together.
Or when my baby tries to help me fold the laundry to be adorable.
- Take the moments you have throughout the day to connect with your loved ones. You will never regret those moments. You can do this by even doing chores together!
- Read a book or the bible for a few minutes a day.
- Sip a warm cup of tea or coffee
- Take a warm bath at night when everyone is asleep.
- Take a moment and just watch your children when they are playing happily together and be grateful for that beautiful site.
There are always moments in the day that are worth stopping for. Take the chance to notice it and be grateful that you get to have those moments.
6. Connecting With Loved Ones
I don’t know about you but sometimes I feel really frustrated or annoyed because I didn’t actually spend anytime with the people I loved that day.
There where around but I was too busy doing the housework and dinner that I never got the time to sit and read that book, play that game or was too angry to make polite conversations.
- Start your morning doing something with your kids or spouse.
- Make breakfast together, dry dishes together, read to your kids while they are eating breakfast. You will never regret having those moments with them.
- Sit down and have at least one meal a day together with your family. Everyone is together, no other distractions and you can make conversations around the table. There is even a cool little game where you ask questions to each other which is a great way to learn more about each other. I plan on getting it and giving it a go!
- Going outside is not just beneficial for you but for everyone. Take 10 to 30 minutes of your day and go for a little walk together, weed the garden, plant some seeds, push on the swing. Seriously anything! You will feel so refreshed and renewed and your kids or spouse will benefit from the fresh air as well! It’s good to just get out sometimes!
7. Learning Or Trying Something New
This has been the most rewarding thing for me personally. Keeping your mind active while learning new skills is extremely rewarding and fun.
I wrote a post on homemaking skills all homemaker should learn if you would like to read more about that. I think we can always continue learning new skills and it really does keep life more interesting and fun. Here are a few ideas to get you on your way.
- Try something new in the kitchen. Wether it’s sourdough recipes, (I have heaps of recipes for you!), fermentation, storing food, making a new recipe. Just try something new so your mind is engaged and you have something new to look forward to. Fun to change things up.
- Learn to sew whether it’s by hand or with a machine. It’s seriously so fun and addicting. Start with something small like hand sew a rip in some clothes or a button on a jacket. You will love doing these little small sewing projects and will feel so accomplished once it’s done!
- Learn to macrame and make cute items for you house! I want to learn but don’t currently know how to do this. There are so many adorable projects on youtube you can watch and learn to make.
- Make your own bath and body products! This can be so fun, cheaper than store bought and way better ingredients. It’s super customisable and the kids can get involved in a lot of this as well so quality time checked of the list too lol.
No matter what it is you can always keep learning something new!
Conclusion
Everyday won’t always be a beautiful rainbow with butterflies but we can have more good days than bad.
Changing your mindset, slowing down, spending time with the people you love and doing things that bring you joy as well as the house chores can really make the difference between a good and bad day.
